From the beginning of spring school holidays on September 16, 2017 Australia Zoo’s new meerkat mob will be perched and ready to meet guests!
The mob of 10 cheeky female meerkats and their carefully designed new home are long-awaited additions to Australia Zoo’s African section, situated at the far end of the savannah where our large giraffe herd, zebras and rhinos roam together.
The new exhibit itself is a carefully constructed meerkat heaven, replicating the sandy desert plains where they live in the wild. Meerkats are extremely busy and inquisitive animals. They’re ultra-alert, love to dig and are constantly re-arranging the objects in their home, much to their keeper’s interest and surprise each day.
Our new meerkat section of the Zoo has been fittingly sponsored by Australia’s most recognisable brand for meerkats, Compare the Market (*squeak*, Simples!) and as part of the partnership will be helping the Australia Zoo crew name their pint-sized new additions.
Abigail Koch, spokesperson for Compare the Market said the company is thrilled to be involved in choosing names for four of Australia Zoo’s new residents.
“Compare the Market is delighted to help bring meerkats to Australia Zoo. We know more than anyone how much Aussies love meerkats and are sure that this exhibit will soon be a firm favourite among the Zoo’s guests.
“We invite all meerkat-lovers to enter our competition to name one of these little ladies from September 15th, simply visit comparethemarket.com.au to submit your favourite name. Winners will automatically become the proud ‘adoptive’ parent of their own meerkat!” said Abigail.
Terri Irwin is looking forward to another buzzing holiday period and officially opening the meerkat’s new home up to Zoo guests.
"We are all excited to welcome meerkats for the first time in Australia Zoo's 47 year history.
Our guests will be able to book exclusive experiences and personally meet our mischievous meerkat girls. Actually, I think our meerkats enjoy meeting our guests even more!" She said.
Guests visiting Australia Zoo from September 16th will be able to check out Australia Zoo’s new meerkats and offer naming suggestions for four of the meerkats via Compare the Market’s website from Friday 15th September.
For people who love meerkats but can’t get to Australia Zoo to visit these little beauties in person, Australia Zoo will also host a live streaming virtual reality camera in their new home in partnership with Compare the Market. The meerkat’s daily activities will be streamed live from September 16th using the 360fly 4K Pro camera. For more information about this technology, visit 360fly.com/solutions.
